C-TRIZ: Concept, Structure, and Its Application in Industrial Enterprises

AbstractTan Runhua 002

In China, driven by the Ministry of Science and Technology and the China Association for Science and Technology, the TRIZ-based technical innovation method is being widely promoted and applied in industrial enterprises. The extensive practical experience of enterprises has raised numerous research questions for further development of the TRIZ theory. This presentation begins by introducing the speaker’s proposed technology transfer model, the mass "Innovation Engineer-Invention" model. By analyzing case studies from enterprises that have adopted this model, the basic concept of C-TRIZ (Chinese TRIZ, Theory of Inventive Process Solving), its structure, and the 11 types of inventive processes are outlined, forming the C-TRIZ theoretical framework. As an application of C-TRIZ, the presentation also introduces an agile innovation design process model for the manufacturing industry based on C-TRIZ and a three-stage model for transferring TRIZ/C-TRIZ to enterprises. Case studies of technology transfer demonstrate the promotion and application of C-TRIZ in industrial enterprises.

Biography of Tan Runhua

Tan Runhua (1958-), Ph.D. from the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Zhejiang University, is a Foreign Academician of the National Academy of Engineering of Ukraine and a Foreign Academician of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences. He is the founder and Honorary Lifetime Director of the National Engineering Research Center for Technological Innovation Methods and Tools and a professor. He also serves as the Vice President of the Innovation Methods Research Association and the Chair of the Technical Innovation Methods Committee. He was formerly the Vice President of Hebei University of Technology.

Tan is one of the first scholars to introduce TRIZ (Theory of Inventive Problem Solving) to China. Based on the practical application of TRIZ in domestic enterprises, he developed the C-TRIZ (Chinese TRIZ) methodology. He has led and completed multiple national projects, including the National Key Technology R&D Program, the 863 Program, special projects on innovation methods, and projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China. He has received numerous awards, including the First Prize for Scientific and Technological Progress in Hebei Province. In 2016, he was honored with the prestigious international TRIZ award, the "Altshuller Medal."

Tan has authored 20 books on innovation methods, applied for over 100 patents, and published more than 500 papers in journals and conferences, including Technological Forecasting & Social Change, Journal of Engineering Design, Computers in Industry, Advanced Engineering Informatics, Computers & Industrial Engineering, Journal of Mechanical Engineering, and Computer Integrated Manufacturing Systems. He has supervised 45 Ph.D. graduates.

Tan pioneered the mass training model of "Innovation Engineer-Invention." He has transferred technological innovation methods to over 2,000 enterprises, including China National Chemical Corporation, China State Shipbuilding Corporation, CRRC Tangshan, China CNR Corporation, CITIC Heavy Industries, China Academy of Space Technology, SANY Heavy Industry, HBIS Group, Baogang Group, China National Petroleum Corporation’s North China Oilfield, and Baotou Steel. Through these efforts, more than 10,000 innovation engineers have been trained, leading to a significant number of invention patents, new technologies, new processes, and new products. These initiatives have generated substantial economic and social benefits for collaborating enterprises, enhancing their independent innovation capabilities. The resulting technology transfer model has had a profound impact on the promotion and application of TRIZ/C-TRIZ in enterprises.
